Threatened Wildlife Corridor

One of the locals having a nap in the Wildlife Corridor at 22 Bundanoon Rd Woronora Heights. This is the bushland that is between Woronora Heights and Engadine. One of the most significant Wildlife Corridors in the Sydney Basin. Sydney Water is planning to sell off some of the land for 3 supersized residential sites at the detriment of this critical wildlife corridor used by our native wildlife

22 Bundanoon Rd is the section of Bushland entering Woronora Heights. It is a known Koala wildlife corridor linking Heathcote National Park into the Loftus Valley including Engadine, Woronora, Loftus, Yarrawarrah, Bonnet Bay and Sutherland. Koalas and other wildlife cross through this virgin bushland.

22 Bundanoon Rd is virgin bushland which is in the hands of Sydney Water. Sydney Water, lodged a Development Application DA21/0336 with Sutherland council to turn this section of the Koala Wildlife Corridor into residential housing lots. We thank Sydney Water for recognising the importance of this land as part of the Koala and Wildlife Corridor linking Heathcote National Park into the Environmental Protected areas of Loftus Valley and beyond. As a consequence, we received notice from Sydney Water that they withdrew the DA on 3rd November 2022.

Koolah the Koala visiting Woronora Heights to lend her support to the Woronora Heights and Engadine Wildlife Corridor Preservation Group.
The community’s objectives are
1. Have Sydney Water withdraw this Development Application in the interest of the local Koals. This objected was acheived on 3rd November 2022. We thank Sydney Water for withdrawing the DA to the benefit of the local Koalas.
2. Have the land rezoned for future protection of the wildlife corridor.

In September 2023 the local Heathcote MP, Maryanne Stuart, advised that $4.3 million (23/24 budget) had been allocated to the transfer of the land within the wildlife corridor in Woronora Heights to the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Services.

During April 2024 represenatives from National Parks and Wildlife Services and Sydney Water met on the 32.7 hectares site to progress the transfer of the Wildlife Corridor Land from Sydney Water to the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Services. This process will have the land rezoned to Zone C1, National Parks and Nature Reserves, for its future protection to the benefit of our endangered Koalas and other local wildlife.
